Pewter fountain and basin with a scene of Saint George and the dragon

A pewter shell-shaped basin, raised on two claw feet with a scalloped rim and a straight, upright backplate with a relief scene of Saint George and the dragon, supported by two graceful scrolls. A metal rod is attached to the back, reinforcing the pewter. Above hangs an acorn-shaped water reservoir with a soldier as a valve. Three ancient (Thaler) coins hang from rings with lion heads. The spout has a dragon's head with a rotating valve shaped like an angel's head. Marked three times on the front and faded. It appears to have a German pewter mark depicting an angel in an oval circle, and the date is possibly the second half of the 18th century, given the edge of the pewter mark.

Saint George and the Dragon is a famous Christian legend in which Saint George, a Roman soldier, defeats a fearsome dragon and rescues the princess. The princess was chosen as the next sacrifice, as they had no more livestock or trinkets for the dragon. They began sacrificing a human once a day.

Dutch toy chair by Ko Verzuu for ADO, 1920s

A miniature toy armchair by Jacobus (Ko) Verzuu (1901-1971) for ADO, executed in purple, grey, yellow, and black plywood, with pierced back and sides. Stamped to the underside with an early pine tree stamp and with original early pencil markings. Model number 595.

The story of ADO toys begins in 1918 in Apeldoorn. German barracks, where Allied officers had been stationed during the First World War, were placed at the Berg en Bosch villa. From 1918 onward, patients suffering from tuberculosis, a lung disease that proved fatal for many people before the Second World War, were accommodated there. Treatment consisted of rest in the Berg en Bosch Sanatorium. After their stay at the sanatorium, patients were expected to return to work. In preparation for this, aftercare patients worked in the ADO workshop from 1922 onward, an idea of director Willem Bronkhorst (1888-1960). Because the patients were not yet fully able to participate in society, they were called "disabled workers." The products from the workshop were therefore called "labour by disabled people," abbreviated to "ado." The patients made all kinds of objects, such as toys, under the direction of Jacobus (Ko) Verzuu (1901–1971), and weaving, under the direction of Elisabeth Loke (1902–1988). The workshop leaders also designed the products.
